Walk-In Shower Cost Guide: What Actually Drives the Price

A walk-in shower quote can range from $14,000 to well over $30,000 for what looks, from the outside, like a similar project. The spread comes down to a short list of specific choices — not a mysterious contractor markup. Here's what actually drives the number.

The baseline: a standard tub-to-shower conversion

Removing an existing tub, waterproofing the wet area, and installing a code-compliant shower pan, standard tile, and a framed or semi-frameless glass panel, without moving plumbing significantly.

Typical range: $14,000 – $26,000

What pushes the price up

Size and curbless entry

A curbless (zero-threshold) shower requires the subfloor to be modified so the drain sits lower, which adds framing and plumbing labor beyond a standard curbed shower. Larger showers also mean more waterproof membrane and more tile.

Frameless glass

Frameless glass enclosures cost significantly more than framed or semi-frameless options because of the thicker tempered glass (typically 3/8"–1/2") and precision hardware required — but they're also the single biggest visual upgrade in most bathroom remodels.

Tile pattern and size

Large-format tile (12"x24" or bigger) actually installs faster than small mosaic tile because there are fewer pieces and grout lines, but it costs more per square foot in material. Herringbone patterns, by contrast, use standard-size tile but take substantially longer to install due to the cutting and layout precision required.

Bench seating and niches

A built-in bench or recessed niche for shampoo storage adds framing, waterproofing, and tile detail work — worth it for daily usability, but it's an add, not a default.

Showerhead configuration

A single showerhead is included in standard pricing; a rain head, handheld combo, or full body-spray system adds both fixture cost and additional rough plumbing.

A realistic mid-range example

A curbless shower, roughly 4' x 5', large-format porcelain tile, semi-frameless glass, a built-in niche, and a rain-head/handheld combo — the configuration we build most often for primary bath remodels in Carmel and Fishers — typically lands at $22,000 – $34,000.

The line item that isn't optional: waterproofing

Regardless of size or finish level, a full waterproof membrane behind the tile and correct pan slope aren't upgrades — they're what determines whether the shower is still dry behind the wall in ten years. We build this into every shower quote as standard, because it's the one corner that's genuinely expensive to fix after the fact.
