Kitchen cabinets or flooring first? Plan the installation sequence

The right sequence depends on the flooring system, cabinet design and appliance clearances. Don't use “cabinets first” or “flooring first” as a universal rule. Have the cabinet installer and flooring installer agree on the details for the exact products before either order is finalized.

Identify the floor's installation method

A floating floor behaves differently from a floor fixed to the substrate. Shaw's laminate guidance explains that a floating installation needs freedom to expand and contract. Ask the flooring manufacturer how fixed cabinetry, islands and heavy built-ins must be handled for your product.

Tile, glued flooring and nailed flooring have their own requirements. A sequence that worked in a neighbor's kitchen may not fit yours.

Resolve the finished heights

LocationWhat to coordinate
DishwasherInstallation and future removal with the finished floor in place
RefrigeratorOpening dimensions, ventilation and floor protection
IslandFixing method and interaction with the floor
Cabinet baseRequired support and finished height
DoorwayTransition height and door clearance
Toe kicksFinal fit and access where needed

Include the total floor build-up: preparation, underlayment, finish and any relevant adhesive or assembly layers. The visible plank or tile thickness alone may not be the finished height.

Put the sequence on the schedule

Ask who verifies that the substrate is ready, when cabinets are set and when appliances arrive. If painting, countertop templating or plumbing work depends on cabinet placement, show those dependencies too.

Clarify who protects the finished surface and who repairs damage from later trades. Don't assume temporary protection is suitable for every floor product; follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Check future service, not just installation day

A dishwasher that can be installed before the floor is finished may still be trapped later. Ask the installer to confirm future removal access. Similarly, a floor that looks continuous beneath an island may violate the product's installation requirements if the island fixes it in place.

Compare the tile-versus-LVP guide and kitchen-remodel timeline. When you request project planning, share the flooring and cabinet products already selected. The final sequence should be a coordinated installation decision rather than an assumption made by the first trade on site.
