Open-concept layouts remain one of the most requested kitchen remodel changes we hear in the first consultation — and it's also the change most likely to run into a structural surprise if it isn't evaluated properly before a homeowner gets attached to a specific design.
How to tell if a wall is likely load-bearing (before you call anyone)
- Location relative to the house's centerline. Walls running perpendicular to floor joists, especially near the center of the home, are more likely to be load-bearing than walls parallel to joists or near exterior walls.
- What's directly above it. If there's a wall in the same location on the floor above, or the roof ridge runs above it, that's a strong signal it's carrying load.
- Basement or crawlspace clues. A support beam or a row of support posts directly beneath the wall's location usually means it's load-bearing.
None of this replaces an actual structural evaluation — these are just signs worth noticing before you fall in love with a layout that might need significant engineering to achieve.
Non-load-bearing wall removal
If a structural evaluation confirms the wall isn't load-bearing, removal is primarily a demo, electrical relocation (if outlets or switches are in the wall), and drywall/flooring patch project.

Load-bearing wall removal
Requires a structural engineer to size a replacement beam (usually a flush beam hidden in the ceiling or a header with exposed posts), permits, and construction to properly transfer the load — often including temporary shoring during construction.
Typical range: $8,000 – $20,000+, depending on span length and whether the beam needs to be hidden in the ceiling (flush beam) versus a simpler dropped header.
What "hidden beam" vs. "dropped header" actually means for your ceiling
A flush beam sits within the ceiling joist depth so the ceiling stays flat with no visible drop — it costs more in engineering and often requires LVL or steel beam material, but it preserves clean sightlines. A dropped header is simpler and less expensive but leaves a visible beam or soffit where the wall used to be. Most homeowners going for a true open-concept look choose the flush beam despite the added cost, specifically to avoid a visual line where the old wall was.
Don't forget what's actually inside the wall
Electrical wiring, plumbing vent stacks, HVAC ductwork, and even structural bracing can run through a wall you're planning to remove — all of which need to be relocated, not just demolished.
