The single most common lighting mistake we see walking into a pre-remodel kitchen isn't a bad fixture choice — it's relying on one ceiling-mounted light source to do every job in the room. Cooking, cleanup, entertaining, and casual daytime use all have different lighting needs, and a kitchen that's properly lit for one of them is usually poorly lit for the rest.
The three layers every kitchen needs
Professional lighting design breaks a room into three functional layers, and a kitchen needs all three working together, not one layer doing all the work.
Ambient light
The general, overall illumination of the room — usually recessed ceiling cans on a dimmer, spaced to avoid dark corners without flooding the whole ceiling in the same even wash. This is the layer most builder-grade kitchens actually have, which is part of why they still feel flat: ambient light alone has no depth.
Task light
Focused light exactly where work happens — under-cabinet LED strips illuminating the countertop where you're actually cutting vegetables, and pendant lighting positioned over an island's prep zone or sink. Task lighting is the layer most frequently missing entirely in older kitchens, since under-cabinet lighting wasn't standard until relatively recently, and it's the single upgrade that most changes how a kitchen feels to actually cook in.
Accent light
Purely decorative — toe-kick lighting along the base of the cabinets, interior cabinet lighting behind glass-front doors, or a statement pendant chosen as much for its shape as its output. This layer is optional in a strict functional sense, but it's what gives a kitchen the warm, layered glow that reads as designed rather than just illuminated.
Getting the island right
Island pendant lighting is the highest-visibility lighting decision in most kitchen remodels, and the two mistakes we correct most often are hanging pendants too high and spacing them incorrectly for the island's actual length. As a starting point: pendant bottoms typically sit 30"–36" above the counter surface, and for a standard three-pendant layout over an 8-foot island, spacing the fixtures roughly 24"–30" apart from center to center keeps the light — and the visual rhythm — even without crowding.
Under-cabinet lighting: LED strip vs. puck lights
LED strip lighting has largely replaced individual puck lights for under-cabinet work, and for good reason — a continuous strip eliminates the dark gaps between pucks and gives even coverage across the entire counter run. We wire under-cabinet lighting to its own switch or dimmer, separate from the ceiling cans, so it can run on its own in the evening without lighting the whole room.
Color temperature matters more than most homeowners expect
LED color temperature is measured in Kelvin, and mismatched temperatures between fixtures is a subtle but real problem — a warm 2700K under-cabinet strip paired with cooler 3500K recessed cans reads as slightly off even when a homeowner can't articulate why. For a warm, residential kitchen feel consistent with wood cabinetry and brass hardware, we typically spec 2700K–3000K across every fixture in the room, ceiling to under-cabinet, so nothing clashes.
A realistic lighting budget
For a full kitchen remodel, a properly layered lighting package — recessed ambient cans, under-cabinet LED strip, and 2–3 island pendants — typically adds $2,500–$6,000 to the project depending on fixture selection and how much of the ceiling needs new wiring versus reusing existing runs. It's a cost line that gets trimmed under budget pressure more often than it should, given how much it affects daily use of the room.
