Homeowners frequently ask whether there’s a “best” time of year to start a kitchen or bathroom remodel. Since these are interior projects, weather matters less than most people assume — but it’s not zero, and scheduling has real seasonal patterns worth understanding.
Interior remodels aren’t weather-dependent the way exterior projects are
Unlike a roof replacement or exterior addition, a kitchen or bathroom remodel happens almost entirely indoors, so a snowy January doesn’t meaningfully slow down demo, framing, plumbing, electrical, cabinetry, or tile work the way it would an outdoor project. The one exception is any project involving a footprint extension or exterior wall opening, where weather can genuinely affect the timeline for that specific phase.
Where scheduling actually matters: contractor and supplier availability
Spring and early summer are the busiest booking season for remodelers across the Indianapolis area, which means design consultation slots and project start dates both push further out during that window. Late fall and winter are typically our most available scheduling window — homeowners who start the conversation in November or December are often able to get on the schedule faster than someone calling in April.
Material lead times matter more than season
Cabinetry lead times, in particular, run 4–8 weeks depending on the manufacturer and finish, regardless of time of year — this is a bigger scheduling factor than weather. Custom or special-order tile and stone can add additional lead time. We build these lead times into your project timeline at the design stage so there are no surprises once demo starts.
The case for planning in fall or winter
If your goal is to have a finished kitchen or bathroom in time for spring or summer entertaining, starting the design process in late fall gives cabinetry and material lead times room to run in parallel with permitting, so construction can start as soon as materials arrive rather than waiting on them mid-project. Winter project starts also tend to have more flexible contractor scheduling, which can mean a shorter gap between your consultation and your actual start date.
The case for planning in spring or summer
Some homeowners specifically prefer a summer remodel because it’s easier to manage disruption to daily routines — kids are out of school, or a temporary kitchen setup in a garage or basement is more tolerable in warm weather than in the middle of winter. There’s no wrong season for an interior remodel; it’s really a question of your own household’s tolerance for disruption and how far in advance you’re able to plan.
